Xiao Esp32S3 & WIO-SX1262 Low RSSI

I have a pair of Xiao Esp32S3 & WIO-SX1262.

I have installed an Arduino Lora tx/rx ping pong example.

Messages are sent between the 2 with no problem. I set the power to -22dBm, and the frequency to 915MHz. One thing I have noticed is the RSSI power levels reported in the received messages are very low, typically -70dBm when the two units are very close. I thought it might be the antennas, so I tried the same experiment with 2 Heltec V3. In that case I got Rssi of -10dBm, which is what you would expect.

Any ideas anyone? What might I be doing wrong?
