Sensing AC voltage with XAIO

so I may want to use a XIAO as a data collector to sence when an AC motor pump is running and log these events… so lets say the pump is a basement sump pump and so the pump is controled by a float switch and the float switches 110v wall power. for whatever reason I do not want to change the situation… I just want to sense when electric power… current is flowing in the wire and feed this data to a XIAO for post processing.

The question is how to best perform this sensing?

I am assuming a clip on coil is the best but wondering if anyone has any innovative solutions?

Hi there,

And Happy Turkey Day to you and Yours..:+1:

So, that is the device that is used, The “CT” as it’s known.. Will do exactly that , Sense the amount of Current flowing in the Wire… Many home automation systems use them, “emporia” is one I have installed and it worked very well using many pairs of the CT’s of differing sizes. Each gets connected to a input of the system and logs the events.

Just like the Grove “EMG” with the 3.5" jack Pad inputs & I2C output.

Those should work easily.

i was wondering if anything would be smaller than a current transformer (CT) another problem with CT is you have to isolate one wire… so you cant just clip the cord if the neutral is also in it… i was liking no contast… wondering if magnetic… but magnetic doesnt work as easy for AC.. but i guess even with magnetic AC is should be relitavly easy to tell if the unit is running or off..
