Longer FPC Ribbon Cable for reSpeaker Flex XVF3800 Linear-4

Hello,

I am purchasing the reSpeaker Flex XVF3800 Linear-4 with XIAO ESP32S3 and have a question about the FPC ribbon cable between the Linear-4 microphone array and the main XVF3800 board.

I understand the included cable is approximately 20 cm (8 inches), 24-pin, 0.5 mm pitch.

My installation would benefit from placing the microphone array on the front of a covered patio beam while keeping the XVF3800/XIAO electronics protected on the rear side of the beam. I may need approximately 30–40 cm (12–16 inches) of cable to do this cleanly.

Could you please tell me:

  1. Can a longer FPC cable safely be used between the Linear-4 microphone array and XVF3800 board?
  2. What is the maximum cable length Seeed has tested or recommends?
  3. Does Seeed sell or recommend a compatible longer cable?
  4. If I source my own cable, are there specific requirements beyond 24-pin / 0.5-mm pitch, such as contact orientation, conductor type, impedance, shielding, or other specifications?
  5. Would increasing the cable length to approximately 30–40 cm cause any potential problems with the microphone clock/data signals, signal integrity, interference, or reliability?
  6. Could a longer cable negatively affect any XVF3800 features such as beamforming, AEC, noise suppression, microphone synchronization, or far-field performance?

I would prefer to keep the microphone array exposed toward the listening area while placing the main electronics in a shaded, protected location, rather than enclosing the microphone array itself.

Is there any admin that can possibly help. i am just wondering if I could use a longer ribbon cable on this device or is it a distance issue?

The official documentation only specifies the included 20 cm, 24-pin, 0.5 mm-pitch FPC cable; it does not provide a tested maximum length. The cable carries a 2-4 MHz microphone clock, multiple PDM data lines, 3.3 V, and interleaved grounds, so extending it to 30-40 cm may increase noise, clock distortion, and voltage drop.

A longer cable might work, but I would not assume it is reliable without confirmation from Seeed. It must have the correct contact orientation and identical pin mapping, not merely the same pin count and pitch. Keep it away from power wiring, LED drivers, Wi-Fi antennas, and other noise sources.

If signal errors occur, beamforming and noise suppression could suffer indirectly because these algorithms depend on clean, synchronized microphone data. The microphone geometry itself would remain unchanged.
