Title: Jetson Orin / reComputer Cameras: Why Pi HQ (IMX477) Struggles & Better Drop-In Alternatives
:face_with_hand_over_mouth:
Hi There

I see a lot of folks hitting walls when trying to run dual Raspberry Pi High Quality  (IMX477) or v2 (IMX219) camera modules on Jetson Orin Nano / NX carrier boards (like Seeed’s J4012).

Before spending days recompiling device trees or scratching your head over waitCsiFrameEnd() timeouts and nvargus-daemon crashes, it helps to understand why the standard Pi cameras are fundamentally fighting Jetson hardware, and what modern alternatives exist that work natively out of the box.

1. The Pi HQ Camera Pitfall: The R8 Resistor & 1.8V Logic

  • The Conflict: Raspberry Pi camera modules are built for 3.3V logic. Jetson carrier boards use 1.8V GPIO signaling on their CSI connectors.

  • The Culprit: On genuine Pi HQ cameras, resistor R8 forms a divider into the APX803 reset supervisor. At 1.8V, the Jetson struggles to pull the sensor cleanly out of reset. Single-camera setups often float by, but the moment dual cameras load the bus simultaneously, CAM0 typically fails frame sync negotiation.

  • The Fix: R8 has to be physically desoldered/removed to keep the camera permanently enabled on Jetson boards.

2. Better Drop-In Camera Alternatives

If you don’t want to perform board surgery or fight custom JetPack 6 device tree bandwidth allocations, look at Jetson-native modules—specifically from Arducam:

  • Arducam IMX477P (Jetson Native Edition):

    • Same 12.3 MP Sony sensor and CS-mount optics as the Pi HQ.

    • Native 1.8V I/O from the factory—no R8 desoldering required.

    • Integrated software-switchable IR-cut filter.

  • Arducam AR0234 (Global Shutter):

    • 2.3 MP (1080p).

    • Global Shutter: Completely eliminates rolling-shutter “jello” and motion blur for high-speed tracking or robotics.

    • Hardware Genlock / Trigger Sync: Has external trigger pins to sync dual-camera stereo frames down to the microsecond.

  • Arducam IMX519:

    • 16 MP compact module.

    • Includes onboard closed-loop autofocus (PDAF), far outperforming the fixed-focus IMX219 for close-up inspection.

Why Go Jetson-Native?

  • Zero Resistor Surgery: Designed around 1.8V signaling from day one.

  • Streamlined Drivers: Packaged with driver overlays that properly map dual-channel CSI lanes and VI aggregate bandwidth under JetPack 6 (R36.x).

  • Hardware Frame Sync: Crucial if you’re building stereo depth or dual-angle capture pipelines.

If you are planning a multi-camera build on reComputer, save yourself the headache of Pi-specific hardware quirks and look into Jetson-tailored MIPI modules!

I like this one

getting better, but I’m PIE’d out , yea RP fatigue

some cool , crazy , spookie , peripherals. :face_with_tongue:
