Issues booting Odyssey J4105

Good afternoon!

I’ve bought a second hand, should be working, Odyssey X86J4105 with emmc and Windows installed on it.

When turning it on, it shows the Windows boot logo but after that just powers off (blue light goes off as well). It won’t boot.

I’ve tried booting the Windows USB stick but that shows to same behavior, it boots with the logo and than the Odyssey powers off.

I’m also not able to boot Ubuntu (x86 or x64 bit versions), it just does not boot the USB (which is working on other desktops without issues.

I’ve reset the BIOS back to defaults, played around with enabling or disabling secure boot but all without any improvement.

The BIOS has been updated to the latest firmware, same for the EC firmware, but that did not make a difference at all.

I looked for similar issues on this forum but couldn’t find an answer, so i’m hoping someone else here has a suggestion that might help.

I’m looking for answers on the following:

  • Are the default BIOS settings correct or should i change something after reset to default?
  • What can cause the device to power off without error?

Thanks!

Hi there ,
and Welcome here…

So it’s a WIndows box now basically then? , What a bout safe mode boot? Have you tried that? also what about a (live)LINUX on a USB will that boot?
Power supply is up t snuff +5v , +12V ,-12V you have a voltmeter?
Most windows PC’s will only do that if there is a Error in POST, Video, or RAM mostly , but bad bios maybe?
Leave the Secure boot alone…, from what you have described I’m looking at power or ram?
see if it will boot a USB drive with Windows 10/11 setup on it. Just to see if it will stay on after it initializes.

Emmc are finicky tech so if it’s spotty you get weird stuff. Give a SOLID visual inspection for any corrosion or FAT capacitors… You get a power supply with it? is it original?

Hi,

Yes its Windows but i have no issues trying something else just to get the thing to boot haha

Live linux on USB does not boot, it doesn’t start loading the USB at all. It just shows a blank screen. Booting the UEFI USB option results in showing the boot options menu agian, selecting the legacy option results in a blank screen.

It does not boot the Windows USB either, can’t even get to recovery mode.

The power supply meets the specs from Seeed, not sure if its the original. The mainboard seems good as well, no corosion of burned places. BIOS boots without issues, so that part works.

I was thinking the same about RAM or power, since it has issues with USB boot. Will try another power supply if I have one!

Since its not booting live USB’s, I suspect either a setting thats not correct or an issue with the RAM. Installing it om emmc could be skipped by using an m2 solutions.

Okay I might have to quit me job since i’m no longer able to troubleshoot IT issues.

It was indeed the power supply that caused the strange behaviour. I had a screen next to the PC and checked that adapter and not the one from the Odyssey. It turns out that the guy who I bought it from supplied a Linksys power adapter with just 500ma instead of the 2 ampere needed. Swapped the supplies and Windows is running as it should.

Thanks for helping and thanks for pointing me in the right direction!
