High Fidelity measuring methods

Hi all,

I have a project where I am looking at determining the distance between 3”-8” that’s accurate to 1/16”

I have a current strategy using a sort of fitted device (think a spring loaded tube) where a rotary decoder could be used. This will work and fidelity is excellent.

However I’m thinking there may be alternatives such as optic/laser instead of a slide bar device, but I haven’t found anything that looks to have the range/fidelity.

Any suggestions appreciated
