I want to use a Seed Studio Lipo Rider V1.3 Lipo Rider V1.3 | Seeed Studio Wiki with a LiPo battery. Do I need to add a circuit protection against a discharge of the battery that would damage it and render it unusable / nonchargeable ?
Yes, the LiPo article is relevant as general background, although it does not document the Rider’s protection circuitry.
The LiPo Rider V1.3 manages charging and limits the battery charge voltage to 4.2 V, but its documentation does not specify a guaranteed low-voltage discharge cutoff. Charging protection should therefore not be assumed to provide complete battery protection. This LiPo battery overview and Proteus library provides some additional background on common LiPo battery configurations.
I recommend using a single-cell LiPo with a built-in protection circuit. If the battery is unprotected, add a 1S protection board providing over-discharge, overcharge, overcurrent and short-circuit protection.
Also ensure that the battery can safely support the load current—the LiPo Rider specifies a maximum supply current of approximately 600 mA. A protected battery is the simplest and safest choice, even if the Rider’s boost converter stops producing 5 V when the battery becomes too low.
