Switching a pin direction from output to input

I have problems reading data when I make a pinMode(myPort, OUPUT) to pinMode(myPort, INPUT). I guess the problem is that I change the port pin from output to input.

Is it allowed to change the direction OUPUT to INPUT?

I found the reason in the documentation. Many thanks for the technical contributions. I have adapted the library of SoftwareSerial (halfduplex inverted)) and it works.
