Stand alone stepper motor controller and driver

we’re developing a new mobile machine which has to operate stand alone. We are using two bipolar stepper motors. Searching on the internet we came across the L297 and L298N combination. Is is possible to use this as a stand alone combination? If not, what else do we need to use it as a stand alone driver and controller? MCU?

They won’t work on their own, you need an MCU.
