When I plug the relay shield into my Arduino everything works great.

But when I remove the shield and provide external power it does not work. Does the shield have to be mounted to the Arduino to work? If not what do I need to do to make it work off of the Arduino?

Sorry for the late reply.
This Shield can work independently.
You just provide the external power and control it with setting D0/D1/D2/D3 pin HIGH/LOW .
