Intel IOT Edition (gen2) - base shield not working

Hi - i have an Intel Edison with Grove - Starter Kit Plus Intel IoT Edition (gen2). I am able to flash the firmware and run the Blink example program. However, I am not able to access any devices via the Grove Base Shield.

For example, when I run the temperature program and connect the sensor, I get a continuous -273.15 reading on the monitor port. No sign of life.

Any assistance would be appreciated as I am hoping to do some cool experiments.
