grove i2c rgb lcd display issues

I am finding the even using the provided examples with the library from github, it will sometimes miss a char or even display a different char than asked. anyone have a clue why this is happening and how to fix?

Linkit one with firmware and support libraries 1.1.17
Grove I2C RGB LCD display connected directly to grove port on linkit one
