Can't upload programs to USnoobie

I’m using the arduino IDE and I get these errors when I hit upload.

Binary sketch size: 1044 bytes (of a 28672 byte maximum)
avrdude: Warning: cannot query manufacturer for device: error sending control message: Operation not permitted
avrdude: error: could not find USB device “USBasp” with vid=0x16c0 pid=0x5dc

I added the Usnoobie to the arduino devices list so it should know how to talk to it.
The Usnoobie shows up as a USBasp AVR Programmer when I use lsusb in the terminal, so it has a presence on the system somewhere.
I’m running 10.04 Ubuntu.

I know other people have had to re-upload the bootloader. Do I need to as well?

Was your usnoobie recognized by PC as a “PRFFTECHNIK USB DEVICES”?
Could you tell me when did you bought the usnoobie from our on line store?
