I got it all figured out. What was not clear to me was the the code which was being flashed was being flashed to the GPS xadow part, not to the RePhone part. Nothing was explicit about it, and I thought the gps part simply was the part on the xadow board. Once I realized there was a microprocessor on the GPS xadow board, I realized the flashing routine was referring to THAT part.

I have successfully flashed the updated code following the directions above, and the coordinates are correct for longitude now. I used a Adafruit 8266 Huzzah part.

Hi, I am newbie when it comes to working with microcontroller. Can we use an Arduino Zero or a Teensy board to flash the GPS firmware? I don't have a board with ESP8266. I apologize in advance if it's a dumb question :(

Alternately, can I use an FTDI cable to update the GPS firmware?

Technically it must be possible, however the uplodaer scripts must be adjusted. How: don't ask me, I uploaded the firmware on my other modules with a JTAG, and it's a different story.

Yes, i used ESP8266, because it was 3.3 volts.
And so are Zero and Teensy.
It is plain Arduino code, except a function called yield() inside there, that is too avoid the processor entering watchdog reset.
Maybe you must redefine that, or comment it out.
Good luck
