Hi there,
I recall a post for I2S DAC or something connected to a Xiao NRF52840 BL or Sense a while back and getting it working, but NOT the ESP32-C3 (what’s that his lowPower little brother? ESP23-C3) LOL 
I don’t see why it wouldn’t ?
Anyway I2S seems to work very well for better audio forsure.
