What does the terminal window say? You may need to change the baud of the terminal to 115200. When you reset the Arduino, the examples should say whether or not the shield was initialized properly.
If that failed, check your CS pin designation in the sketch. I believe the new version uses CS on pin 9 and the library is defaulted to 10.
